What it looks like
Milo opens his phone for one second.
Two hours later he surfaces, deep in a video hole, completely lost. The actual work is still untouched.
From the outside it looks like he cannot focus. But he just focused, hard, for two hours straight.
Why it happens
That focus was not broken. It was hyperfocus: the same power that can lock onto anything, aimed at the wrong target.
An ADHD brain cannot force attention onto a boring task by willpower alone. But it locks on, without effort, to anything that feels rewarding. The phone got there first, so the phone got the two hours.
So the goal is not trying harder. The goal is picking the target before something else picks it for you.
Hyperfocus isn’t your enemy. It just needs a target.
The stupid-small fix
Build a two-minute ritual. Same song, same seat, same first tiny action. Do it every time, before opening anything else.
Milo sits down, puts on his headphones, presses play, and opens his notebook to the dog-eared page. That is the ritual. It is short and a little boring, which is the point. It gives his focus something to grab that leads into the work.
The moment the ritual ends, hyperfocus clicks onto the task instead. Milo gets through the thing he had been avoiding all week, barely noticing the time pass.
Small win.
If the focus sticks too well
Hyperfocus does not watch the clock, so put one outside your head. Set a timer for when you need to stop, eat or leave. Locking on to the right thing is great. Missing dinner is not part of the plan.
Common questions
Why can I focus for hours on games but not on work?
Games pay back instantly and keep changing. Work usually pays later. The ritual gives work a quick, predictable start, so focus has a handle to grab.
Does the ritual have to be a song?
No. It has to be the same every time. A drink, a light, one specific chair. Repetition is what turns it into a signal.
Is hyperfocus good or bad?
Neither. It is a strong current. Point it at something you care about and it can carry you a long way.
