How do you overcome perfectionism and procrastination when the work is already done? Take the Send button away from yourself.

What it looks like

Dana’s deadline is 9:00 tonight. It’s 8:55. The deck is done, the email is written, and Milo’s cursor is on Send.

He reads it one last time. Then one more. Then he checks slide four again.

Now it’s 9:40. Forty-five minutes of “one last check.” The deadline is gone, and the email is still in drafts.

Why the last step is the hardest

At the finish line, perfectionism switches from polishing to checking. Each check feels responsible. Each one is really the brain stalling the moment of being judged.

The finished work is the scariest version, because there’s nothing left to blame. A draft can be “not done yet.” A sent email is just you, out there. So perfectionism and procrastination team up for one last delay, and with ADHD time blindness in the mix, forty-five minutes can disappear without feeling like more than five.

Each “last check” feels responsible. It’s the brain stalling.

How to overcome perfectionism and procrastination: schedule the send

Schedule the send.

Next time, the moment the deck is done, Milo picks a send time before the deadline and presses Schedule instead of Send. Then he closes the laptop. The decision is no longer his to make in the scary moment. The clock doesn’t get nervous, and it never needs one more check.

Most email apps, including Gmail and Outlook, have a “schedule send” option. Texts and social posts can usually be scheduled too.

Common questions

What if I find a mistake after I schedule it?

You can edit or cancel a scheduled email until it goes out. Knowing that makes pressing Schedule much easier than pressing Send.

What are the best ways to overcome perfectionism?

Start ugly, edit once, show work early, fix flaws without restarting and schedule the send. Each one is a fix from Milo’s day, all on one page.

Is perfectionism part of ADHD?

It is not a symptom on the official list, but many adults with ADHD describe it. Years of hearing “careless” can turn polishing into armor. ADDitude has a good overview: when perfectionism stems from ADHD. Only a professional can tell you whether ADHD is part of your picture.
